A tense situation erupted at Kandalkadu in Kinniya when the Sri Lanka Navy conducted a raid to arrest illegal sand miners in the mouth of the Mahaweli river.

Navy media spokesman, Lieutenant Commander, Isuru Suriyabandara told our news team that 12 seamen who received injuries during the incident were hospitalized.

The Navy launched the raid with the approval of the Presidential Task Force to prevent illegal sand mining in the Mahaweli River.

The Navy also stated that 6 boats were also seized during the raid yesterday.

In addition, 7 illegal sand racketeers have also been arrested early this morning and two Lorries used to transport such sand were also seized.

However, residents in the area backed by the racketeers have objected to the navy continuing its raid this morning.

Thereafter, navy personnel were compelled to shoot into the air to disperse the angry crowd.

Meanwhile, one of the three illegal sand miners who went missing by jumping into the river was taken into police custody while the body of another man was discovered this afternoon.
