The trade union action launched by the Customs workers yesterday against replacing their Director General, GSM Charles with a retired navy officer is further continuing.

Consequent to the strike, it is reported that the function of 75% in the import and investigation divisions have been disrupted.

This situation could incur a loss between 3 to 4 billion rupees as the country looses duty on imports.

However, the customs departments at the Katunayake International Airport, Passenger services and export services divisions of the Colombo Port are functioning as usual.

However, the strikers threatened to extend the strike to those divisions unless an immediate solution is found.

The trade unions charge that the practice is to appoint a Sri Lanka Administrative Service officer to the post of Director General of the Customs, and this time, the authorities are preparing to contravene that practice by appointing a person without such qualification.

They claim that they are not ready to welcome a Director General without SLAS qualifications.

Meanwhile, President of the Customs Officers Union, Uditha Jayasinghe stated that his union expects to meet the President today to discuss the matter.
