Customs work to rule continues;Threatens to stop general services

The Customs unions have threatened to withdraw  from providing general services if a swift solution is not given to the current dispute regarding the Customs Director General post.

Addressing a media conference in Colombo this morning, vice secretary of the Customs Staff Officers union Sudath de Silva said that it is notable that there is an increasing influence from the political arena with regards to customs activities.

customs officials have been on strike for three days now, voicing their objection to the appointment of a retired navy officer to the post of director general.

75% of activities at the Import and Investigation Units have been disrupted due to the strike, thereby  incurring a loss, to government coffers daily revenue of approximately 3 billion rupees.

The trade unions also threatened to extend the strike to Katunayake International airport , passenger services and export sectors as well if a solution is not found in the very near future.
