Minister Lakshman Kiriella has handed over a proposal to form a unity government intending to increase the number of Cabinet ministry portfolios this morning.

The resolution has suggested increasing the number of Cabinet minister to 48 while non-cabinet and deputy ministers to 45.

The present Cabinet is limited to 30 and, the number of State and deputy ministers is limited to 27.

However, the government expects to appoint 18 new cabinet ministers and 18 non-cabinet ministers under the proposed unity government.

However, the deputy secretary general of parliament, Neil Iddawela told our news team such a proposal should be debated and get it passed by parliament.

He said a date for the debating will be decided in the next meeting of the political party leaders’ meeting.
