71st Independence Day proudly celebrated; Mahinda present, Chandrika and Fonseka absent

The 71st National Independence Day was celebrated today at the Galle Face Green in Colombo.

The celebrations were held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, while Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was the guest of honor.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaranathunga and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka were absent at the celebrations.

However, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and TNA Leader R Sambanthan were present.

President Maithripala Sirisena, after arriving hoisted the National Flag as school girls sang the National Anthem.

A 2 minute’s silence was observed in remembrance of heroes who laid down their lives for the motherland.

5,848 Tri Forces personnel participated in the National Day celebrations while 3,872 among them were from the Sri Lanka Army.

In addition to many cultural events and display of fire power, a locally manufactured multi barrel rocket launcher was unveiled today.
