Failure to achieve a lasting political solution is regretted, says the President at the Independence Day celebration

The 71st National Independence Day was celebrated today at the Galle Face Green in Colombo.

The celebrations were held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, while Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was the guest of honour.

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and TNA Leader R Sambanthan were present as well.

President Maithripala Sirisena, after arriving, hoisted the National Flag, as school girls recited the National Anthem.

Later a two minute silence was observed in remembrance of the war heroes who sacrificed themselves for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

Thereafter a 21 gun salute was held for the President.

Addressing the gathering, President Maithripala Sirisena said that the inability to achieve a full political solution with the consensus of all communities is regretted.

At the same time, he said that he is strongly against the proposal to form a unity government.

Meanwhile, 5,848 Tri Forces personnel participated in the National Day celebrations.

In addition to many cultural events and display of firepower, a locally manufactured multi-barrel rocket launcher was unveiled today.

At the same time, several countries had sent greetings to Sri Lanka for its 71st Independence Day today.

Queen Elizabeth II, in her congratulatory message wished fortune, happiness and prosperity for all Sri Lankans.
