It is reported that one thousand container loads of essential goods have been stranded in the Port due to the ongoing strike by the customs workers.

Meanwhile, wholesale traders have staged a protest in Pettah this morning claiming that they are inconvenienced by the customs strike.

Our correspondents stated that the wholesalers on 4th and 5th Cross Streets have closed their shops and joined in the protest.

Consequent to the closure of wholesale shops, merchants from outstations have faced much inconvenience as well.

Meanwhile, container transporters union has also decided to boycott services effective this afternoon to show solidarity to the customs strike.

The strike launched by the Customs officers demanding the reinstatement of former customs director general PSM Charles completes one week today.

Vice President of the Customs Staff Officers Union Sudath de Silva told our news team that the government has failed to find a solution to the issue as yet.
