The work to rule trade union action which was launched by the customs joint trade union alliance for the past 6 days concluded last night.

This was following the official announcement made by the ministry of finance, informing them that the former director general of the customs department, P.S.M Charles has been reinstated.

The cabinet paper submitted by the minister of finance, Mangala Samaraweera previously on the removal of P.S.M Charles from the post of director general of customs was withdrawn yesterday at the cabinet meeting.

Accordingly the cabinet approved the reinstatement of P.S.M Charles who was removed from the post of director general of customs for another 3 month period.

The employees of the customs department engaged in work to rule trade union action from the 30th of January against the appointment of a retired Navy officer to the post of customs director general upon the removal of P.S.M Charles.

However, the Chairman of the Customs Superintendents Union Uditha Jayasinghe noted that trade union action was suspended upon the ministry of finance informing them that she had been reinstated.
