Customs strike incurs a 12 billion rupees loss

Customs trade unions state that a loss of over 12 billion rupees was incurred due to the week-long strike.

President of the Customs staff officers union, Sudath de Silva told our news team that over 7 thousand containers of goods are currently stranded in the Colombo Port.

He said steps will be taken to clear them as soon as possible.

Customs workers called off the strike after the Cabinet paper which removed the customs director general from her post was withdrawn by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

Meanwhile, wholesale traders who closed their shops yesterday claiming that they were inconvenienced by the strike opened for business today.

At the same time, media spokesman of the essential goods importers union, Hemaka Fernando said the customs have taken action to clear certain container goods such as potatoes, big onion and garlic as they are prone to rotting.
