A tense situation arose in Parliament today when speaker Karu Jayasuriya responded to the statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena in the house yesterday afternoon.

Opposition MPs demanded a debate over the response made by the speaker against the president’s speech.

Later, the speaker was compelled to adjourn the sessions for 5 minutes as the tense situation continued.

The speaker said that the president’s remark that the Constitutional Council ignored the seniority of judges when they are appointed to the Supreme Court is not correct.

He said the seniority is considered one of the yardsticks in appointing judges to the Supreme Court.

He further stated although the president stated that 12 names of judges he proposed to the Supreme Court were rejected, the constitutional council filled the positions according to the available vacancies.

He also said certain remarks made with regard to the Human Rights Commission should also be corrected.

Meanwhile, MP Wimal Weerawansa stated that 12 MPs were trapped for 15 minutes on one of the lifts in parliament.
