The foreigners who stole fauna and flora in Singharaja have a record fine imposed.

A court order by the Kalawaana magistrate, Dulan Weerawardena has fined the five foreigners who confessed to collecting fauna and flora within the Singharaja forest reserve what an official from the wild life conservation department, Mahinda Seneviratne noted as being the highest imposed fine in the history of wild life conservation, under the 1937 fauna and flora protection act

The 5 foreign nationals who are Slovakians had been arrested in Kalawaana on the 2nd of February, for illegally obtaining  771 species of butterflies, Beatles and other insects along with several other plants species from the Singharaja forest reserve.

They were later remanded and produced before courts yesterday.

 the magistrate ordered a suspended prison sentence of 10 years to be served in 3 months, in addition to the fine which was imposed.

Further, the equipment in their possession including cameras was confiscated.
