The suspect who illegally cleared a container of 12 tons of Tendu leaves has been remanded until February 25th.

He was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today.

The suspect is also the main suspect of the re-export racket of Vietnam pepper to India.

The suspect is charged for evading duty of 40 million rupees.

However, suspect, Nurdeen Fazal Ahamad who was arrested recently was released on bail by the court inadvertently.

According to the Customs Ordinance, a suspect who commits a fraud over one million rupees could be given bail only by a High Court.

Customs officials pointed out on a previous occasion that releasing this suspect on bail had disrupted their investigations while three other suspects are already in remand in connection with the same fraud.
