An assistant Customs Superintendent and a Customs Inspector were sent on compulsory leave over the release of a container of 12 tons of beedi leaves which resulted in a 40 million rupee  loss to government in tax revenue.

Making submissions to court the Sri Lanka Customs stated yesterday that the two officials had been sent on compulsory leave.

The suspect  released on court bail after Sri Lanka Customs had arrested him  in connection with clearing the container has been remanded till 25th of this month after being produced before the Colombo chief magistrate yesterday.

The suspect who was remanded is also the main suspect in the trafficking of importing  pepper to sri lanka from Vietnam and then re-exporting it to India.

The container of beedi leaves had been imported to Sri Lanka on 3rd December last year.
