Sri Lanka’s first ever satellite will be launched in to space in April this year.

Sri Lanka's Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education said that this will mark Sri Lanka’s entry into the global space age.

The research satellite, named RAVANA-1 was designed and built at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan by Tharindu Dayaratne and Dulani Chamika two Sri Lankan engineers.

The cube satellite weighs 1.1 kilograms.  

RAVANA-1 satellite has been handed over to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and will be sent to the International Space Station in April 17th.
