2 suspects who were arrested following the hit and run accident which caused critical injuries to the Traffic OIC of Borella, IP Ananda Sagara Sarachchandra have been released on bail today.

However, Colombo Additional Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara ordered to remand Navindu Omesh Rathnayake who drove the ill-fated Defender at the time of the accident.

Navindu Omesh Rathnayake is a son of an SP attached to the VIP security division.

Meanwhile, the media was not allowed to cover the court proceedings when the suspects were produced before court today.

The OIC was run over at Dupli-Bullers Junction at Bambalapitiya while he was on his way for duty at 4.35 am yesterday.

The hit and run defender was found parked in a house at Pagoda Garden in Pelawatta Battaramulla last afternoon.

Its owner has also been identified as 27-year old Visitha Sri Wijesekera of Colpetty.

At the same time, it was revealed that Navindu Omesh Rathnayake, the son of the SP attached to the VIP Security Division drove the Defender at the time of the accident.

The owner of the vehicle, Visitha Sri Wijesekera is believed to have sat next to the driver and, MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son was also onboard the ill-fated Defender.

Meanwhile, the son of MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Rasika Bandara Aluthgamage reported that he was accompanied by a 27-year old woman and a 28-year old man.

At the same time, the owner of the Prado Vehicle which followed the ill-fated Defender at the time of the accident and two others were also arrested after they surrendered to police this morning.

Later it was revealed that the Prado jeep was driven by UNP CMC member Duminda Attygalle.

Attygalle is the owner of the Prado jeep.

A senior police officer investigating the accident stated that all the 8 suspects arrested earlier were drunk at the time of the accident.

Meanwhile, Borella Traffic OIC Ananda Sagara Sarachchandra who received critical injuries in the hit and run accident is still receiving treatment at the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital.
