The Colombo High Court acquitted Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera this afternoon from the case against him for illegally keeping an elephant calf in captivity.

A two and a half-year-old elephant calf was found from Dhammaloka Thera’s residential temple, Alan Mathiniyaramaya in Polhengoda on January 27th in 2015.

Later, the Thera was sued under the Flora and Fauna Act.

Dhammaloka Thera is the first Sri Lankan citizen to be sued for keeping an elephant calf illegally in captivity.

Having announced the judgement to acquit the suspected Thera, Colombo High court judge Sampath Wijerathna ordered to hand over the elephant calf to the Wildlife Department.

However, State counsel, Janaka Bandara who appeared for the Attorney General, informed the court that an appeal will be filed against the High Court judgement.
