The Police Special Task Force discovered more than 167 kilograms of heroin during an operation carried out at the Moratuwa-Rawatawatte house where Kelum Indika alias Kewumaa, who was taken into custody together with the diamond valued at Rs. 5 billion, is said to have stayed.

Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said that this stock of heroin was valued at more than Rs. 1800 million.

In addition, ammunition used for a T-56 weapon together with a pistol was also discovered.

The Peliyagoda Division Crimes Investigation Unit arrested Kelum Indika alias Kewumaa at Keselwatte- Panadura on the 5th of this month.

Later it was revealed that this suspect and Makandure Madush had carried out the robbery of a diamond from a house in Pannipitiya-Arawwala.

The Police questioned at length Kelum Indika aka Kewumaa who was taken into custody.

He was produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

On this occasion, the Court ordered that the suspect be remanded until the 22nd of this month.

Meanwhile, experts of the Gem and Jewellery Authority who inspected the relevant diamond confirmed that it was not a diamond at all.

This was declared by its Chairman Reginald Cooray.

He said that a committee comprising of three members was appointed to examine the diamond.

At the time of the inspection, the owner of the diamond and officers from the Peliyagoda Division Investigation Unit who were engaged in investigations were present.

A top official of the Peliyagoda Division Investigation Unit said that, anyhow subsequent to obtaining a court order, the diamond will be sent for further examination to the Geo Science Study Division of the Peradeniya University.

The official said that until then the diamond was taken into his custody and placed in a protective safe.
