The fishermen from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu have staged a strike charging that the Sri Lankan Navy are taking fishermen from their community and fishing boats into custody.

The protestors have demanded that the Indian Central government and the State Government should negotiate with Sri Lanka to settle this issue.

In addition, they demand that they should be paid compensation for 37 boats which have already decayed beyond repair whist in the custody of the Sri Lankan Navy.

The protestors have  requested the release of two students, who were arrested along with Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Our news team contacted Navy media spokesman, Lieutenant Commander Isuru Suriyabandara to comment on the matter.

He said that the release of the Indian fishermen needs to take place in accordance with the legal procedure in place.
