The resolution on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka by the Core Group has been forwarded to the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The 5 Core Group members, Canada, Germany, Macedonia, Montenegro and the UK were instrumental in presenting the same resolution to the Human Rights Council in 2015.

The resolution welcomed the establishment of the Office of Missing Persons, the return of private land previously occupied by the military to civilian ownership and the proposed repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act 1978, and the preparation of the draft Counter Terrorism Act.

Titled “Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka” the four point resolution requests the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to strengthen their advice and technical assistance on the promotion and protection of human rights and truth, justice , reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka.

The resolution further requested the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to assess the progress on the implementation of its recommendations and other relevant processes, related to reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka, and to present a written update to the Human Rights Council at its 43rd session and a comprehensive report at the 46th session.
