The resolution on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka by the Core Group will be officially forwarded to the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council tomorrow.

The Core Group members include Canada, Germany, Macedonia, Montenegro and the UK who presented the resolution to the Human Rights Council in 2015.

The four point resolution requests the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to strengthen their advice and technical assistance on the promotion and protection of human rights and truth, justice, reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka.

The resolution further requested the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to assess the progress on the implementation of its recommendations and other relevant processes, related to reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka, and to present a written update to the Human Rights Council at its 43rd session and a comprehensive report at the 46th session.

Meanwhile, a tense situation erupted during a session held on the sidelines of the UNHRC sessions in Geneva yesterday.

The session was organized by an NGO, Pasumai Thaygam together with Tamil Center for Human Rights of France.

A group of Tamil activists led by a former Northern Provincial Councilor MK Sivajilingam participated in the event.

At the same time, another group led by retired Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera was also present at the venue.

Heated words were exchanged between the members of the two groups.
