A top official of the Ceylon Electricity Board said that the pilot project of creating artificial rain in the catchment areas of Castlereagh and Moussakelle has been suspended temporarily.

Since there were no clouds or water vapour in the skies above these catchment areas the CEB said this project was halted for now.

The project of creating artificial rains above the Castlereagh and Moussakelle reservoirs was carried out the Air Force on the 22 and 23 of this month very successfully.

The water level of the Moussakelle has dropped 62.6 feet below spill level and the CEB said that only about 6 feet of water can be used to generate electricity. They also said that the water level at the Castlereagh reservoir has dropped 48 feet below spill level and that they can use only 10 feet of the water remaining to generate power.

Due to water levels at the Moussakelle reservoir dropping rapidly, the Sri Sammuganathan Hindu Ghanadevi Kovil which went under water when the reservoir was filled with water, can be seen now. This Kovil was built in the year 1917 using rock stones and people come to hold poojas and make offerings daily.
