Sri Lanka is to push for international protection of its endemic lizards that are threatened by smuggling.

A proposal for the protection of lizards is to be submitted when Sri Lanka hosts a global biodiversity trade summit next month.

The 18th meeting of the Conference of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora convenes in Colombo from the 23rd of May.

Samantha Gunasekera, Director of the Colombo-based Conference of Parties Secretariat, said that Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot and there is a need to introduce multiple layers of protection for the species.
