The government has declared tomorrow a day of mourning in respect of those who were killed by suicide bombers at several places including churches and leading hotels yesterday.

President’s Media Unit stated that this decision was taken during the National Security council meeting presided by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning.

The National Security Council has decided to gazette the clauses in the prevention of terrorism under Emergency Regulations with effect from midnight today.

The communiqué of the President’s Media Unit further stated that such actions will be taken to empower police and army to ensure protection of the country and its people.

Meanwhile President Sirisena expects to call all residential ambassadors and high commissioners to explain the current situation of the country. 

It further said that the President expects to request international assistance for Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the president has issued directives to the security forces to provide necessary protection to churches and other places.  

Meanwhile, the Security Council has decided to cancel all May Day rallies organized by different political parties.
