Although schools reopened, attendance is very low

Although the second school term for students of Grade 6 to 13 reopened today amidst security, it was reported that attendance was extremely low.

Students were allowed into school after searches were carried out and our Correspondents said that Police as well as the Army and Police Dogs were seen in the vicinity of the schools.

School for students from Grade One to Grade Five will reopen next Monday.

At the same time, Police took steps to introduce special parking lots from today for vehicles transporting school children.

Anyhow, Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam expressing views to the Hiru News Division said that although attendance of students were less than usual today, he believes that it will return to normal in the upcoming days.

Meanwhile, the Lanka Principals’ Association said that the parents’ mentality has still not become prepared in order to send their children to school, under the prevailing conditions.

Universities in the country have also been closed without a proper day announced for reopening.

A top official of the University Grants Commission said in response to an inquiry made that no decision has been arrived at regarding the date for opening universities as yet.

He also said that several discussions in connection with the issue are to be held in the near future.
