Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera said that the government had decided to reduce VAT imposed on tourist hotels from 15% to 5%.

He further said that the government also decided to exempt from tax, all security equipment purchased to ensure protection in tourist hotels.

With the collapse of arrival of tourists in the country due to the emergency situation that arose as a result of the series of suicide bombings that took place on Easter Sunday, the Minister said these decisions were made to prevent the decline in the tourism industry.
