Chairman of the commission to investigate fraud and corruption between 2015-2018 Justice Upali Abeyratne, has noted that if witnesses are being influenced, action could be taken to terminate their employment.

This was following evidence provided by a doctor regarding the vaccine fraud with regard to the Maharagama Apeksha cancer hospital.

The doctor had noted that due to her witness accounts before the commission, she is in duress as the senior officials have attempted to influence and threaten her.

Previously, a complaint was lodged regarding an incident where a doctor had been threatened by the former acting director of the national blood transfusion center as a result of providing evidences to the presidents commission regarding fraud and discrepancies which had taken place.

In addition, the government medical officers association had written to the president noting that the doctors providing evidences before the commission have been threatened.

Meanwhile, according to the witness account provided by the doctor regarding the fraud and discrepancies pertaining to the vaccines at the Apeksha hospital, she had noted that the vaccine contained a drug unsuitable for the initial stages of breast cancer.

She added that she had informed the supplies unit regarding the matter, when patients conditions turned critical following its usage.

The doctor also revealed that during instances when the respective drug had not been prescribed, certain ministry officials had forced the use of the exact drug.

Specialist doctor Gihan Gunasekera also provided evidence regarding this situation before the commission.
