The Police Special Investigation Unit has recorded statements from three officials including the Acting Director of the Colombo Crimes Division.

This was in relevance to investigations being carried out regarding some fault committed by the Police when submitting facts to the Court in connection with 9 employees of the Copper Factory in Wellampitiya who were taken into custody, produced before the Court and released on bail.

Police said that statements were recorded from the three Police Officers who arrived at 10.00 in the morning yesterday for approximately 9 hours.

Statements were recorded thus from the Acting Director of the Colombo Crimes Division Superintendent of Police Udaya Hemantha, Superintendent of Police of Wellampitiya Vidura Jayasinghe and Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Division of the Wellampitiya Police, Inspector of Police Piyal Gunatillaka. Subsequent to the suicide bombing at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo 10 persons who worked at the Copper Factory were taken into custody during an operation carried out by the Police and the Colombo Crimes Division.

According 9 of the suspects were released on bail on 6 May. Since it was not clear under which laws the suspects were produced in Court, on that day Additional Magistrate of Colombo Priyantha Liyanage ordered that they be released on two surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each.

This Copper Factory belongs to Mohammed Ibrahim Insaf Ahamed who was the suicide bomber who carried out the attack at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

The Police Special Investigations Unit launched an investigation on 8 May to inquire into whether some fault had been committed by the Police when submitting facts to Court regarding these suspects.

It was accordingly that these three Police Officers were summoned and questioned at length.
