Police curfew in North Western province continues; Schools and state institutions closed

Police curfew is still in force only within the North Western Province.

Police curfew was imposed in the province after a few incidents occurred in certain areas.

Police stated that the Army has been deployed in the area to maintain public security.

Meanwhile, all schools and state institutions in the North Western Province have been closed today and the day is declared a public holiday.

Our correspondents stated that Hettipola, Panduwasnuwara, Kuliyapitiya and Thorakatuwa areas have returned to normal following the tension.

In addition, Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam engaged in an inspection tour in Kuliyapitiya and Panduwasnuwara this morning.

Meanwhile, police headquarters have advised senior police officers to take maximum measures by exercising authority within the legal framework in order to prevent incidents.

In addition Army commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake making a special statement to media noted that if a peaceful situation is not sustained, the army may have to use its force against it.

Meanwhile, owing to the tense situation which erupted in several areas, access to social media including facebook continues to be blocked.
