762 prisoners to be released under the Presidential Pardon to mark Vesak Poya Day

The Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms said that 762 prisoners will be released under the Presidential Pardon to mark this Vesak Poya Day.

The State Function to release prisoners will be held at the Welikada prison playground at 10.00 am on Vesak Poya Day under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Prisoners are due to be pardoned thus under Clause No. 34 of the Constitution and it is of significance that all the releases will take place at the Welikada prison playground, the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms said.

Arrangements have been made to release 736 male prisoners and 26 female prisoners under the Presidential Pardon.

Among the prisoners who will be released are 117 from the Welikada Prison, 62 from the Open Prison Camp in Pallekelle, 55 from the Mahara Prison, 50 prisoners from the Anuradhapura prison and 53 from the Pallansena Prison Camp.

Apart from prisoners who have been jailed for rape, crimes against minors and drug offences, the Ministry said that those who were imprisoned for minor offences are being released.

The Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms said that it is significant that this is the time that the largest number of prisoners are being released at once.
