It is the responsibility of the government to bring about permanent peace in the country – President says at the war heroes’ commemoration

President Maithripala Sirisena declared that the tri-forces and especially the intelligence divisions have the ability to bring an end to the extremist terrorism connected to the Easter Sunday attacks.

The President made this comment when he participated in the war heroes’ national commemoration function held today (19) near the Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, War Heroes’ Monument.

The 10th anniversary function of the victory over the 30-year war which freed the country from terrorism commenced subsequent to the arrival of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and other invitees.

Subsequent to the arrival of the President, the national anthem was sung and the function commenced.

Then a two-minute silence was observed in memory of the war heroes who died in the war. Religious observances of all religions were conducted after that.

The President addressing the function said that it is the responsibility of the government to bring about permanent peace in the country.

Subsequent to the President’s speech, a war-drums performance was held.

It was after that that placing of floral tributes at the monument began.

President Maithripala Sirisena placed a floral tribute at the monument first. Then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Commanders of the three-forces, the Acting Inspector General of Police as well as the wives, mothers, fathers and other relatives of the war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the war, placed floral tributes as well.
