The Court of appeal dismissed the petition which had challenged the parliament seat of Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe today.

The petition filed by Colombo Municipal Councilor Shermila Gonawala was taken before Justice Shiran Gunarathna and Priyantha Fernando.

On the previous occasion, the president counsel who appeared for Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe filed preliminary objections citing that the Court of Appeal has no jurisdiction to hear the case as the original documents of the evidence against the charges were not submitted to the court.

He further requested the court to dismiss the petition without taking it for consideration.

Accordingly, the two-judge panel dismissed the petition without taking it for consideration.

Municipal Councilor, Shermila Gonawala stated in her petition that the Prime Minister is not qualified to hold a seat in parliament while owning shares in a private company which is engaged in profit making businesses with state institutions.

However, Municipal Councilor, Gonawala said that she would challenge the Appeal Court judgment at the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Permanent Trial at Bar ordered today to postpone the case against 7 respondents including  former defence secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa until May 30th.

The 7 suspects including Gotabhaya Rajapaksa have been accused of misappropriating 34 million rupees state funds in the construction of DA Rajapaksa memorial museum at Medamulana during the Rajapaksa regime.
