Officers of the Dambulla Special Task Force raided a place which had been maintained for three and a half years under cover of a food production and drinking water manufacturing factory at Kumaraella, Elahera in Bakamuna where excavations were being done in search of treasure. During the raid carried out yesterday (21) night, seven suspects and many equipment was taken into custody.

During an investigation launched by the Police STF officers it was revealed that during the past three and a half years a huge rock had been split open and with the connection of a number of powerful people in the island and the sponsorship of certain government officials a sixty feet deep pit had been excavated in search of treasure.

When the Dambulla Police STF arrived there on a tip-off received, the employees were working in a tunnel under the huge rock.

Police said those arrested were residents of Anuradhapura, Kithulgala, Nivithigala, Ratnapura and Elahera.

With the raid being carried out by the STF one individual had hidden in a toilet of a two-storied house for four hours subsequent to being discovered.

Police said that weapons used to bore rocks, gun powder used to explode rocks, wires, lamps and sacred offerings were found in his possession.

It is said that when the mobile phones of those engaged in this racket were checked, the names of many government officials and powerful businessmen involved in this were revealed.

Accordingly, a number of telephone conversations between the racketeers were acquired by the STF.

The STF said that the phone conversations further revealed how a similar treasure was recovered by this same group in Polonnaruwa.

Subsequent to questioning the suspects they were handed over to the Bakamuna Police.
