The Cabinet approval was given to purchase 400MW to solve the prevailing power crisis in the country.

The approval was given on the recommendations made by a committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take remedial steps for the power crisis under the short term, medium and long term measures.

Accordingly, 200MW will be purchased at 26 rupees 20 cents per unit for 6 months from a barged mounted powerhouse to be set up at Kerawalapitiya.

In addition, another 200MW will be purchased from a similar powerhouse to be set up in Galle.
