A fire has broken out in Mirietahela, Bogahapathana, Wellawaya mountain forest reserve.

Our Correspondent said that this fire had erupted yesterday afternoon (23) and by night had spread to the entire mountain forest reserve.

Police said that by now 50 acres of the reserve have been destroyed completely by the fire.

Although Wildlife Conservation officers and residents of the area tried to douse the fire it was not possible as a result of the severe dry weather and winds that prevailed.

Police suspect that some person would have set fire to the forest reserve with the intention of hunting for animals and the Wellawaya Police is carrying out further investigations.
