The interim report of the Committee investigating the Kurunegala Doctor to be handed over to the Ministry today

An interim report of the Committee investigating Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohammed Shafi of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital who was taken into custody by the Police, is due to be handed over to the Ministry of Health.

Acting Director General of Health Services Dr. Lal Panapitiya said that the Committee which was appointed by the Ministry of Health comprising of six members has already obtained evidence from a number of factions.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) is objecting to the committee appointed under the leadership of Consultant Dr. Anil Samaranayake to inquire into this particular doctor.

Secretary of the Kurunegala Branch of the GMOA Dr. Indika Ratnayake said that the two officials of the Kurunegala Hospital Operating Theater who gave statements to this Committee have informed the Hospital Director in writing that they are withdrawing the statements they gave.

267 Complaints have been received against this doctor who was arrested from the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.

The Hospital Director said that 30 complaints were received by the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital this morning only.

In addition, 21 complaints have been received by the Dambulla Hospital and 12 mothers have complained to the Dambulla Police as well.
