President says he was not aware of the Easter Sunday attacks

Thursday, 30 May 2019 - 15:31

President Maithripala Sirisena states that he was not informed of a possible plan of a terror attack by the police.

In his official Twitter page, the president states he met senior police officers including the IGP on April 8th.

At the same time, President’s Media Unit stated in a communiqué that neither the Defense Secretary nor senior police officers including the IGP who participated in that meeting educated him of information provided by a friendly country of such an attack on Easter Sunday.

Therefore the President’s Media Unit categorically rejects all local and foreign news reports that the president had been made aware of the attacks.

The communiqué said that a statement made by the National Intelligence chief before the parliament select committee was published by certain local and foreign media.

It further said that the national defence council was convened in a different structure to prevent the leaking of vital information to the media.

The Media unit said that the new council met every fortnight and on some occasions, the president convened it weekly.

Meanwhile, different views were expressed with regard to the parliament select committee which is currently probing the Easter Sunday attacks.
