A group of Ministers has requested the President at the Cabinet Meeting held yesterday to implement the law strictly against individuals who engage in extremist activities.

President Maithripala Sirisena had said on this occasion that he will not hesitate in any way to do so.

Meanwhile all Deputy DIGs have been summoned to the Presidential Secretariat day after tomorrow for a special discussion.

The President had informed the Cabinet yesterday that Cabinet Ministers too have the possibility of participating in this discussion.

The President had said that, the prevailing problems can be discussed on this occasion and the ability to arrive at solutions also exists.

The Cabinet has granted approval to amend the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code so that it will enable legal action to be taken in connection with spreading false news.

Accordingly, a person who is found guilty of this offence can be fined Rs. 1 million or a prison sentence of not more than 05 years can be imposed or punishment could be meted out under both of these.

These will be enabled under the amendment to be carried out.

At the same time, Cabinet approval was granted so that legal steps can be taken in connection with making statements of hatred by amending the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

This amended will be done so that any person who is found guilty under this could be fined or a prison sentence imposed.
