If forest density in this country is to be increased and an environment suitable for people to live in is to be created, the President pointed out that such a procedure has to be implemented in this country for a period of at least 10 years. c

President Sirisena made this comment while addressing the World Environment Day commemoration function at the BMICH this morning (06).

This commemorative function was organized on behalf of World Environment Day which fell yesterday (05) under the theme ‘Minimizing air pollution through management of forests.’

The President said on this occasion that being dedicated to properly implementing policy decisions taken on behalf of the environment and laws to protect the environment should be the responsibility of all politicians as well as officials who have actual needs to build up the country and those that wish for the best for the people of the country.

The President pointed out that the commitment of everyone was essential in order to protect the environment in the face of environmental challenges the world is facing by now.

He emphasized further that as the Minister of Environment he has introduced a number of laws for protecting the environment and that he is not happy about the progress of implementing these.

President Maithripala Sirisena said dedicating oneself to more practically implementing those decisions including the ban on polythene which were taken on behalf of the environment is a responsibility which should be fulfilled by everybody considering the future generation of the country.
