The spill gates of Lakshapana, Canyon and Upper Kotmale reservoirs have been opened due to the prevailing heavy rain in the central hills.

The Disaster Management Center has warned the residents in the river basins of Kelani and Kalu that the water levels of the two rivers could increase accordingly.

In addition, the Irrigation Department issued a warning to the residents living on the banks of the streams of Kalu Ganga in the Ratnapura district, as water levels of such streams are also on the increase.

Meanwhile, two 11-year old schoolgirls of Agarapatana Torrington estate were washed away by a waterway this afternoon.

Police said one girl has died and her counterpart is missing.

In addition, the prevailing rain and strong winds could continue until the coming Saturday.

The Met Department forecasts heavy rain in the provinces of Sabaragamuwa, Central and the districts of Kalutara, Galle and Matara.

Meanwhile, the highest rainfall during the last 7 hours ending at 3.30 this afternoon was reported from Kudawa in Ratnapura.

The Met department stated that they have received a rainfall of 172 millimetres.
