Villagers in Jayasundaowita of the Nawalapitiya police area have managed to capture a well-grown leopard this morning that used to terrify the village by setting a trap.

The villagers say that a large number of leopards (Handun Diviya) were found in a jungle near the Mahaweli River in the village of Jayasundaraowita, close to the Mahaweli River. The villagers said that the leopards come to their village during the night hunting for their pet dogs and chicken.

The villagers of Jayasundaowita had notified the wild life officers regarding the leopards coming into in the village, but since they did not get a suitable response from the officials, the villagers have taken measures to catch the leopards and hand them over to the wildlife officials unharmed.

On the 4th of June, a baby leopard was trapped and caught by a villager and they had taken steps to hand it over to the wildlife officials.

The villagers said that the leopard captured today is a male and will be handed over to the wildlife officials.

The villagers of Jayasundaowita  has also installed a security camera system for the operation to capture the leopard.
