Colombo Garbage issue intensifies without a solution

The heaping up of unattended garbage within the Colombo City limits, after the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry suspended disposal of garbage to the yard in Kerawalapitiya since last Monday, has created a critical issue.

Our correspondents have observed that most of the garbage are heaping up at the manning market and by the side of city roads.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Colombo Municipal Council’s waste management board Mahendra Perera said the city garbage is expected to be transported to Aruwakkal in Puttalam from August 11th.

Meanwhile, it is reported that over 2 thousand tons of garbage have already been heaped up in Colombo city limits.

Although the Government has decided to dispose of the Colombo garbage to the yard in Aruwakkal, Puttalam, the Municipal Council is lacking transport to do so.

In this backdrop, an agreement has been signed to hand over the contract of transporting garbage to Puttalam to a private company.
