The Department of Meteorology states that strong winds are expected due to the depression in the North of the Bay of Bengal.

The Fisheries Department has requested the fisheries community not to engage in fishing in small boats around the island for the next 24 hours.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) says that 1,134 persons have been affected by the rains and strong winds experienced in the island while over 600,000 persons have been affected by the dry weather conditions in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Pradeep Kodippili, Assistant Director of the Center stated that 271 houses in Ratnapura, Vavuniya, Kegalle, Puttalam, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya have been partially damaged due to strong winds.

The meteorological department said that the wind speed could increase up to 70 to 80 kmph during the night in the Northern, North-central and North-Western provinces as well as in the Trincomalee and Matale Districts.

The Western, Central, Northwestern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces as well as the Galle and Matara Districts are expected to experience more than 100 millimeters of rain within the next 36 hours.

The highest rainfall for the past 24 hours ended at 10 am this morning was recorded from the Divulapitiya area in Gampaha which was 98.5 millimeters.
