The Dalada Perahera which is the biggest of the Kandyan Festivals that brings great pride to Sri Lanka across the world, has attracted the attention of the local and foreign devotees and tourists alike.

The tradition that commenced during the reign of King Kithsirimevan, with the arrival of the tooth relic is celebrated every year with the blessings of the Buddhists of the world over.

The Dalada Perahera which consists of various ancient classical dance forms, musical items and elephants, is also receiving a lot of attention this year for another special reason.

That is because this year's Dalada Perahera is to parade the streets without any advertisements from the sponsoring institutions.

In 2005, the Dalada Maligawa took steps to completely remove the advertisements contained in the Perahera, with the intent of preserving the Buddhist culture and passing it on to future generations.

However, the billboards of the sponsoring establishments remained around the Kandy town and the Lake.

The Media and Special Project Development Bureau of the Dalada Maligawa came up with a proposal with the sole intention of liberating the Perahera from commercialization.

The proposal was to refrain from displaying advertisements from the sponsorship agents in the Kandy area during the perahera period.

This program was launched under the guidance of the Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara under the patronage of the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapter.

The proposal made in 2012 was successful in 2017.

As a result of these activities, the Sri Dalada Perahera has been free from advertisements and released from commercialization for three years, including 2017.

Stepping aside from the ever-entrenched market values and forces, 15 sponsors of this year's Perahera have decided to provide sponsorship without a change under these conditions.
