The Department of Meteorology states that engaging in fishing and naval activities in the western Arabian Sea continues to be dangerous.

The Department stated that the wind speed could increase up to 70 to 80 kmph in those sea areas and the sea could turn extremely rough.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at different times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Galle and Puttalam and the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil can be rough from time to time.

The Department of Meteorology stated that intermittent showers or thundershowers will be experienced today in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Northwestern provinces. The department stated that the wind speeds on land could develop to around 50-60kmph.

Two sluice gates of the Laxapana Reservoir were opened this morning due to heavy rains experienced in the central hills.  The disaster management centre informed the people around the Kelani river to be vigilant.

Meanwhile the engineers stated that the water level of the Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs are continuing to increase.

The Hiru correspondent stated that power outages have been experienced in several areas including Hatton due to the torrential rains and strong winds experienced in the western slopes of the central hills since last night.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili stated that 2,279 houses around the country have been partially damaged due to the strong winds that prevailed recently.

Meanwhile, flights at Cochin International Airport in India have resumed today after the closure on Friday due to the inclement weather.

According to our correspondent at the airport, the first SriLankan Airlines flight took off to Cochin this morning.
