The Department of Meteorology states that increased showers and strong winds are expected in the South Western part of the country.

The wind speed in the Southern Province could increase to 70 kmph while the wind speeds in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern Provinces could instantly increase up to 60 kmph.

The Department of Meteorology also stated that there could be heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm in those areas.

Resultant to the heavy rainfall that swept through the central hills yesterday, steps have been taken to open two sluice gates of the Laxapana reservoir, and one sluice gate each at the Canyon and Upper Kotmale reservoirs.

In the meantime, the water level of the Senanayake Samudraya in Inginiyagala has dropped to 25 feet after 35 years.

The Department of Irrigation states that when calculated by the acreage, the capacity of the reservoir has reduced by 12,500 acre feet. The total water capacity of the Senanayake Samudraya in Inginiyagala is 770,000 acre feet. However, our correspondent in the area Wasantha Chandrapala stated that due to the prevailing dry weather the water can only be used for drinking purposes.
