Basnayake Nilame of Vishnu Devalaya, Mahendra Rathwatte has decided to remove the old female tusker, Tikiri, from parading the Kandy Perahera.

Damsiri Bandara Karunarathna of Tamed Elephants owners association said the decision was taken after social media posted criticism on bringing the 70-year old female tusker to parade the Kandy Esala Perahera.

A Thai activist against cruelty to animals, Senduin Chailet posted a photograph of the feeble elephant on her facebook on World Tuskers Day, which fell yesterday.

In the caption, she wrote that the 70-year-old Tikiri would find it difficult to parade several kilometres in the night amid heavy noise, smoke and fireworks for 10 days.

Meanwhile, the owner of the elephant Isanka Amal Thilakarathna said that Tikiri was added to the Perahera this time in order to fulfil a vow which was made seeking fast recovery from its sickness.

However, Damsiri Karunarathna said the elephant will not parade the streets today and tomorrow.
