The chairman of the president’s investigations commission, justice Upali Abeyratne says that provision of false evidence by witnesses before the commission is an offense which could proceed to the extent of being tried at the court of appeal.

The judge stated this issuing a warning to the legal director of the road development authority Jeevananda Waidyadasa who testified before the commission yesterday.

Evidence hearing pertaining to the employing of 45 public relation officers and 102 project advisors complying with orders issued by the minister Lakshman Kiriella who was the former minister of education and highways, took place yesterday.

Even though the witnesses noted that for the respective appointment, cabinet approval is not necessary, the state counsel noted that cabinet approval should be sought via director board papers and the common business committee of parliament.

Meanwhile former Sri Lankan airlines chairman, Ajith Dias was summoned before the commission yesterday in order to obtain a statement regarding the storing of paddy at the Mattala international airport.

He noted that Charitha Ratwatte who was an advisor to the prime minister had contacted him via telephone and had inquired if the storage unit of the Mattala airport could be provided for paddy storage.

However, the former chairman of Sri Lankan airlines Ajith Dias noted that he informed Charitha Ratwatte in writing upon discussions with the airport officials that paddy could be stored in the facility.

He further noted that the chairman of the paddy marketing board had informed him of approval received by a cabinet subcommittee upon storing paddy at the facility.
