A group of UNP MPs are preparing to make a proposal to convene the UNP Working Committee urgently at today's UNP parliamentary group meeting.

Political sources say that this group of MPs intend to pressure the party leadership to announce the presidential candidate soon.

The United National Party (UNP) parliamentary group is scheduled to meet at Temple Trees today at 4 pm.

Several rounds of discussions were held last week to resolve the crisis in the United National Party regarding the Presidential candidacy and the new Alliance.

United National Front leaders gathered at the residence of Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne last Saturday to take a final decision on the new Alliance.

Minister Mano Ganeshan, a party leader representing the United National Front, in a tweet following the meeting said that they had reached an agreement for a member of the United National Party (UNP) to be nominated as the Presidential candidate.

However, there was no final decision taken regarding the exact time frame for the formation of the Alliance.

Meanwhile, the discussion that was to be held between Deputy Leader of the United National Party Sajith Premadasa and the Parliament backbenchers of the party has been postponed.

The discussion was scheduled to be held at a leading hotel in Colombo on Monday but it was canceled at the last moment.
