President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has appointed Major General Shavendra Silva the 23rd Commander of the Army effective today after promoting him to the rank of Lieutenant General.

He succeeds Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

Lieutenant General Silva was the Chief of Staff, Colonel of the Regiment, Gajaba Regiment and Colonel of the Regiment, Commando Regiment at the time he was appointed the new Commander of the Army.

At the same time, the American Embassy in Colombo stated in a communiqué that the United States is deeply concerned by the appointment of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva as the Army Commander.

Meanwhile, the President conferred the Weerodhara Vibhushana medal on two war heroes at the presidential secretariat today.

In addition, the new ambassadors for Norway and Netherlands and the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom handed over their credentials to the President today.
