An Army Special Forces soldier who was training at the Uhana Air Force Base in Ampara died when the parachute malfunctioned resulting in a crash.

The deceased has been identified as Champika Kumarasinghe, a 42-year-old army soldier, commissioned officer -2, attached to the Uva - Kudaoya Commando Training School.

The Uhana Police stated that although he had jumped from an air force plane at around 7,000 feet this morning, the parachute had not been activated.

Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Sumith Atapattu stated that the soldier died on admission to the Ampara General Hospital.

The deceased is said to be a resident of the Ovitigama North area in Kirinda - Puhulwella.

The Army Media Spokesperson stated that he had also participated in the Independence Day celebrations.

On May 1st, 2017, a male and a female soldier were injured when a parachute crashed into a high voltage cable during a training session at the Kandurugasaara Commando Training School, Embilipitiya.
